Does it just say Benjamin Gibbard: Musician.
Or is it actually accurate and say Benjamin Gibbard: Poet of Our Times.

This has been a public service announcement to remind you that Funeral is one of the most perfect albums of all time. You should go listen to it. Right now.
Well, this is relevant to what is currently annoying me. Ha!

This is a status on my Facebook newsfeed:
Please keep me in your prayers as I have made the coice [sic] to give up secular music, most likely forever. It’s not gonna be easy, but thankfully there are a few new Christian bands like A———- that are making it easier. thanks :) love you all!!!

What the actual fuck? You mean you’re never going to listen to Led Zeppelin again? How will you not die? You’re not going to listen to the Beatles again? You mean you won’t ever listen to Arcade Fire again? Just let all those emotions inside you shrivel up and die why don’t you. A life without Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, and Arcade Fire is not a life worth living, if you ask me. Not to mention the millions of other evil ‘secular’ artists who also make life amazing. How can you give these up? Doesn’t God want people to enjoy the art in the world? I hardly doubt all secular music can be counted as ‘evil’ while all ‘Christian music’ can be counted as ‘good.’ Lines just aren’t that simple.

Why stop at music, why not just block out all art? No paintings, unless they are religious, no architecture unless they are religious, no sculptures, no creativity of any kind unless it has to do with Jesus. Because that is what Jesus wants you to do in his name; cut yourself off from art, which at its purest is just human communication. Just cut yourself off from human communication. Not to mention an universal human communication that everyone can understand and relate to. Just screw that.

Now, this is what really ticks me off. Paintings for example, you block all of those out for only religious paintings, you are still aware that a lot of those were painted by non-religious people who just wanted to eat, and thus painted what the only patron, the Catholic Church, wanted painted? I mean, a lot of musicains are Christians, just every song they sing isn’t about religion. This is probably because this is how the human mind works. It doesn’t always dwell on religon. Sometimes the human mind wants to dwell on other things. And this person, this pseudo-Christian, wants to shun that from happening. She wants to send a message that thinking only about religion is okay, and thinking about anything else is not okay. This sort of mind trap is in no way biblical and has nothing to do with Jesus. Jesus wanted people to enjoy life, not spend it guilty over the fact they spent a few minutes thinking about something that wasn’t about him. Jesus wants independent followers who faithfully return to him, not followers who give up all independence and get angry at others who don’t. Who would even want a follower like that?
“Hey Bill, go talk to those newbies over there.”
“I can’t, their minds wander to their interests occasionally. They’re evil.”
Yeah. God totally wants people like that.
And all those Christian artists who once in a while make a religious piece of art, not nearly enough, not nearly pure enough, forget they exist. They’re secular, because sometimes they like to ponder other subjects out there. Other subjects are not nearly good enough for God’s followers to admire. Nature? Sure, God might have invented that, but it’s not just God, so screw it. Humans? They might be made in his image, but they aren’t just him, screw them.

Fuck this line of thinking.
